Alfred Pleasonton, commander of the cavalry at Gettysburg, Pa., describing his actions in an engagement with the Confederate cavalry in Virginia, the 4th New York Cavalry abandoning their post after being charged by Confederate cavalry and Buford asking for the dismissal of those responsible, and his distrust for the 4th New York Cavalry under the command of Brig. Gen. David McMurtrie Gregg.

David McMurtrie Gregg, farmer, diplomat, and Union cavalry general during the Civil War. Born in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania on April 10, 1833. Graduated from West Point in 1855, and was assigned frontier duty for six years before the start of the Civil War.
